Humanitarian
Public Schools Athletic League of New York City in Brazil
donating clothing and shoes to underpriviledged children.
During our trips to Brazil we encourage the participants to bring new or lightly used clothes, shoes or toys to be donated to unprivileged children while we're there.
Brazil is a country that is growing; it is well developed and it is a country with an emerging economy. However, there's still a large number of underprivileged families and children.
It’s a great feeling helping other people. One World Games through the kindness of our previous participants has been able to help some orphanages in Brazil.
In 2008 PSAL (Public Schools Athletic League) from New York City, through the sports coordinator Mr. Danny Harris who worked with Nike to donate clothes and sneakers for an orphanage in Belo Horizonte, also the student-athletes donated some of their personal goods to the children. It was a great experience for all that participated in the OWG-Brazil, please read their testimonials below about this experience and watch the video above.
What the participants had to say about this experience:
" The orphanage was the most important part. It shows
how it is important not to take things for granted. It shows us we are
more privileged than we think. Also not to complain about little things
when some people cannot get those little things. "
Marcus Medley, Susan E Wagner
" An experience in Brazil that I will never forget is
visiting the orphanage. It was great to give back to the children who
were less fortunate. "
Samantha Elena Perez, High School of Telecommunications Arts and Technology
" Probably the most gratifying part of our trip to Brazil,
besides competing in the games and making new friends was our visit to
the orphanage. The smiles on their faces just because of the fact that
we were there really moved me. I wish I had brought more clothing to
give to them however, but their positive outlook on life in the most
unwanted of conditions, makes me think about how lucky I am. "
Jason Berlinger, Baruch College Campus
" My favorite part of the trip was when we visited the
kids. It felt really good seeing the kids receive the gifts. They were
so happy and that made me feel very good. I felt really good giving my
stuff away. This trip was an unbelievably great experience that will
stick with me forever. "
Matas Rascius, Grover Cleveland
" I will never forget is when we helped out
the less fortunate and the feeling of being important. I like the helping
the less fortunate because it seemed like we made their day better even
though they are going through hard times. "
Sean Armand, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School
" My favorite part of the trip in Brazil was seeing
the kids. It was hard to see how bad they were living and I felt like
crying for them. It makes you appreciate what you have because others
can’t
have the same things as you."
Brandon Stolz, Truman High School
" I will never forget about going to Brazil and helping
the kids that didn’t have anything. I made me want to cry to see
them like that but it felt good to help them. "
Darwin Ellis, Abraham Lincoln
" A few of the experiences I will never forget in Brazil
is going to the museum and witnessing the different artifacts from the
past and the present. Another experience is when we visited the orphanage
and seeing how happy the little kids were dancing and flipping around
seeing the kids happy while receiving the gifts just made me even happier. "
Shanade Bernard, Queens High School of Teaching
" My favorite part of the trip to Brazil is when we
went to the orphanage and gave away things to the kids who were less
fortunate."
Victoria Story, Midwood High School
" My favorite part of the trip was when we visited the
orphanage. This orphanage consisted of les fortunate. These children
didn’t really
have a lot but was grateful for whatever they got. This made me think
about life and was thankful for everything. Brazil is different from
where I’m from but this experience was a once in a lifetime experience!."
Joshua Lambert, ENY Transit Tech High School
" Going to Brazil to visit was a life changing experience,
but the most memorable moment for me would have to be going to Esportista
Cidadao. I’m never going to forget this trip because giving back
to the kids who didn’t have much made me grateful and appreciative
of what I have. It also made me feel good that I could put a smile on
someone else’s face. "
Essence Shryee Hopkins, High School of Sports Management (Lafayette Educational
Campus)
" Going to Brazil changed the way I thought about life
because we visited an orphanage for less fortunate children. The families
of these children make less that 100 Reais per month and that is equivalent
to $65 US money. That made me realize that I need to appreciate everything
that I get from my parents. This experience made me feel grateful because
I never saw so many children playing with no shoes on their feet and
showing up alone made these children feel special. "
Dyrek Jones, Bedford Academy High School
" I didn’t know that they had poor cities
in Brazil. I realized that we are more fortunate than the rest of the
world. We are much better off. I learned that giving stuff to the less
fortunate makes you feel good inside. "
Shanee Williams, Murry Bergtraum
" What I like the most about the trip was going to visit
the kids who really don’t have much. I enjoyed being there seeing
all the little kids jumping around because the whole PSAL staff members
my friends were trying to give things that they owned because some of
the children were walking around without shoes. I felt bad for them and
I just thought what we did was a great thing because we put smiles on
each and every one of their faces. "
Kaseem Harris, Long Island City High School
